In my role as Programme Manager for Kāinga Ora I have worked with Holmes Construction on two important housing projects. WSP Architecture, and our predecessors Opus Architecture (and before that the Ministry of Works), has a long history of working with the Holmes Construction team across a wide range of projects. Holmes Construction were engaged to construct the Performance Institute (new build) and several of the significant renovation required of existing buildings at the New Zealand Campus of innovation and sport (NZCIS), formally the Central Institute of Technology (CIT). From the outset, their commitment to collaboration and open communication set the tone for a partnership built on trust and mutual respect. This resonated with us, demonstrating tikanga of a high performance team, just as we see the other teams such as the Hurricanes and Phoenix who now base themselves at NZCIS.
What truly sets Holmes apart is their unwavering dedication to fostering a sense of teamwork and transparency. Throughout the entirety of the project, they consistently ensured that we were kept in the loop, actively engaged, and fully involved in decision-making processes. Whilst this meant everyone had to remain flexible in finding the best solutions and navigating through COVID, it also ensured we were able to innovate, leading to several elements such as the altitude / heat studio, interactive screen, giant curtain and pool hoists, either being world firsts or simply the biggest ever undertaken.
The result speaks for itself – a world-class sporting facility that stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and effective communication.
