Holmes Construction was the Main Contractor for the gym refurbishment at Wairarapa College, completed in 2019. This project at Wairarapa’s largest school involved a full structural strengthening of the existing gym, along with demolition and construction of a new entry and a new classroom. The College’s gymnasium is a large structure, measuring 30m long x 20m wide x 8m high. As part of this project the interior of the gym was fully demolished back to bare timber and steel structure. New concrete foundations were then installed, along with new cross bracing to all walls and the roof.
Stringent safety protocols were implemented to allow works to be delivered safely at the busy school site, including comprehensive traffic management planning. Supporting safer and more efficient outcomes for the work occurring at height, a bird cage scaffold was installed to the entire floor area of the gym (600m2) so tasks could be carried out on all walls and the roof.
