Incorporating 62 hotel rooms, 54 apartments, central reception, commercial kitchens, bar and dining areas, conference centre, five retail shops, swimming pool and two Levels of car parking, The Wellington was a large scale project for the team, and one that Holmes delivered on.
The project included two towers, one eight stories tall and one nine stories tall, on a two storey podium. The new works were integrated with and constructed while maintaining the operation of the existing 114 room hotel. The podium footprint covered the entire site; the site having two of its boundaries facing council roads, one abutting the existing Hotel, and the other abutting adjacent buildings.
The works also included underpinning those adjacent buildings, and retaining and incorporating historic facades. The tower crane for the project was erected through the podium structure. Safety of hotel patrons and staff, and the public was a major consideration with the works bounding the existing Hotel, the very busy Cuba Street as well as one of its neighbours being Massey University.
The project was a success for the Client with Holmes completing the works and achieving Practical Completion two months ahead of the scheduled completion date. This was achieved through practical management systems, effective planning of the works, and the experience, drive and skill of Holmes’ Project Manager Malcolm Bird.
